Legally Social... the puns will be here all year

It is safe to say that every law student has every intention of spending the next year working to the best of their abilities. The Hull University Law Society gives students a chance to improve our skills and hone our expertise by competing in various competitions and volunteering for pro bono, but we have another side too- the all important social side. This year, as the social secretary for the Law Society, I will be running socials that vary from paintballing to the famous and glorious law ball, a night to dress in your ball dress or tuxedo and schmooze with other society members.

As a rule, society socials consist of pub crawls and wild theme nights (obviously we will be throwing those!!!). However there will also be some great socials that are not alcohol centred, from cinema or ice-skating trips to laser quest or paintball, and there is no necessity to drink on most of our nights out. As law students we need to get out and de-stress from time to time – ostensibly so we can “work harder”!!! Therefore, we will be doing everything from nights to the cinema, to touring some of the best pubcrawls Hull has to offer, to taking a weekend away to Amsterdam - there is literally something for everyone on offer!

Fresher’s week this year includes a night to get to know your classmates, and those from the years above, to be held in the lawns bar, and a coffee drop in session (so you can ask your favourite committee members any burning questions about the year ahead). The society also hope to ease the pain your pockets will feel by holding a book fair in which you can purchase your textbooks from those in the year above who (hopefully!) no longer need them.

This coming year (and in fact in the coming week), people say that you will make friends that last the rest of your life. I can say on a personal note that when it comes to exams, it pays for some of those friends to be fellow law students! In the run up to deadlines and exams you will always find that it is quicker and easier to get work done when you work with a familiar group, so, because of this, some of our socials towards the end of this year will involve taking over a coffee shop in the name of “revision”...

Hope to see you there!

Sarah.
