Who are Elected?

Every member of the Law Society who are committee are elected annually by the Law Society membership. A list of positions is outlined below:

If you would like like to see who the current position holders are, please visit the Law Society Committee page, and for further information as what each position entails, please visit the Law Society Committee Positions page.

When are Elections?

Each year, we have elections for the following academic year, however due to practical necessity, we have 2 elections. The primary elections are held in April each year, with the secondary elections being held in October.

There are practical reasons for doing this as outlined below:

  1. 1st Year Rep: Those who will constitute the new 1st year are not yet at Hull University
  2. No Candidates: Some positions have no candidates or nominations during the April elections so the October elections allows for these positions to be filled at a later date

The upcoming elections are going to be held on the 26th April 2010. This is typically held on the first floor of the Student Union building, starting at around 7pm. Details will be released nearer to the date.

Who can Vote, and Who can be Nominated?

Only Law Society members can vote in the elections, and similarly, only Law Society members can nominate themselves for a position on the following years committee. Remember, membership fee is only £10 if you wish to put your name forward, or vote.

You can only run for one position!

Additionally Procedural Requirement:

Before submitting yourself for nomination for a given position on the Committee, you need to contact the current rep for that position. Converse with that rep regarding what you believe the position entails, and ask any relevant questions relating to the position.

In the case of the Communications Rep, contact both the 2nd Year Rep and the IT Rep; and for the Recreations Rep, contact both the Social Secretary and the Sports Rep. This is due to these positions being new or reconstituted.

The resubmission of an already published application form, will be allowed only at the discretion of the Committee. In the case of language errors such as spelling mistakes or grammatical issues, resubmission will be allowed. However, in the event of a radically different application with different substantive content, we reserve the right to either, only publish the original application form or display both forms.

How can I view applications before I vote?

We should be making the application forms available via this website once submission is open. They will be collated and present on the Nominations page, which will outline who has applied, for what position and why they believe they should be elected.

Similarly, printed copies of the application forms will be made available on the night of the election.

How can I Vote, and what happens at Election?

On the Elections evening, everyone will be allowed to briefly scan the applications to see who has put themselves forward for candidacy. Shortly after, each nominee will be given the chance to present a speech on why they should be elected, as well as answer a series of questions from the audience - both are compulsory elements of the election.

Once everyone has made their speech, and answered the questions, everyone will be presented with a voting form in which you choose the candidate you wish to elect - or in the event that you wish to vote for no one, select RON (ReOpen Nominations). The ballots will be collated and counted, and the winners will be announced there and then.
